How do I tailor my message for an audience with different levels of knowledge or experience?
Identify the most important decision-maker or influencer in the room and present primarily to their level, while finding a message thread that connects everyone. Use the Who-Know-Care model to map out what each segment already knows, what they care about, and how your message can serve all of them. Lead with what matters to everyone, then layer in depth for those who need it. (This model is described in detail in iSpeak's Presentation Planner, available as a free download below.)
Why it matters: A room full of people with different backgrounds is one of the most common real-world scenarios. If your message is pitched at the wrong level — too technical for some, too surface-level for others — you've lost part of your audience before you've even made your point. The goal isn't to please everyone; it's to answer the one question every audience member is asking: "What's in it for me?"
Practical Tips:
- Use the Know/Feel/Do model as your universal anchor. What do you want the entire room to know, feel, and do? One shared outcome unifies a diverse audience. Build your content toward that, and you'll naturally bridge the gap.
- Acknowledge the gap openly. When the range is wide — say, executives and engineers in the same room — you can say: "For those of you closer to the technical side, here's the detail. For everyone, the key takeaway is this…" People appreciate being seen.
- Present to the decision-maker, not the lowest common denominator. Lead with the business-level message. Details can follow or be offered in a handout for those who need them.
Practice Exercise:
Think of an upcoming presentation with a mixed audience. Write down the two most different people who will be in the room. Write one sentence — a single key message — that would resonate with both. That sentence is your presentation's home base. Check every slide or talking point against it: does this serve that message?
