How do I handle running out of time?

Running out of time is almost always a preparation problem, not a delivery problem. The iSpeak solution is to design your presentation to be concise from the start — and to know your priorities cold so that if you do need to cut, you know exactly what goes.

Why it matters: Every extra minute you take costs your audience time too. In a room of seven people, a 30-minute presentation costs your company 3.5 person-hours. Being concise is a form of respect.

Practical Tips:

  • Aim for the 9-minute sweet spot. For most project updates, proposals, or team briefings, nine minutes is the ideal length. It targets one natural attention lapse (around the halfway mark) and forces you to prioritize what your audience needs to know versus everything you know. Save the deep dive for follow-up questions.
  • Structure around three points only. Use a model like What-Why-How or Good-Bad-New to organize your content. When you run long, it's almost always because you haven't made those three points clear to yourself yet. Defined structure gives you a clear stopping point.
  • Know your "drop" in advance. Before you present, identify which supporting material is nice-to-have versus must-have. If time gets tight, you skip the nice-to-haves without breaking stride. Never cut your close — your closing is the most remembered part of the presentation.

Practice Exercise:

Take a presentation you're working on and challenge yourself to deliver it in nine minutes or less. Time yourself. Where did you run over? That section likely has more information than the audience needs. Try cutting it to one sentence and see if anything is truly lost. You can use an AI practice tool to time and review your delivery.
