How do I explain complex ideas simply?

The problem isn't that your idea is too complex. The problem is that you're presenting from your planet instead of your audience's. iSpeak's approach to simplifying complex content starts with one core principle: connect your world to theirs.

The What–Why–How model is the clearest path through complicated material. Start with What is happening or what the opportunity is. Move to Why it matters to this specific audience. Then explain How — the solution, the recommendation, or the path forward. This logical sequence makes even technical content feel intuitive because it mirrors how people naturally need to receive information.

The other essential move: instead of dumping all your data on the audience, identify the two or three discoveries that actually matter — and build your narrative to flow from one to the next. A slide full of data isn't a story. Three clear points with a logical thread is.

Why It Matters

Complexity is not the same as credibility. Audiences who feel confused don't say "wow, they must be smart" — they disengage. Simplifying doesn't mean dumbing down; it means meeting people where they are. iSpeak's AMY model (Audience → Message → You) is a reminder that your audience's needs come before your content — and your content comes before you.

Practical Tips:

  • Apply the What–Why–How model. Before you open a slide deck, answer these three questions: What is the situation? Why does it matter to this audience specifically? How do we move forward? Structure your entire message around those answers, and complexity dissolves.
  • Use the 6 Questions to Define a Message Gap. Run your topic through Know/Feel/Do (your purpose) and Who/Know/Care (your audience analysis). The gap between where your audience is and where you want them to be is your message. Everything else is noise. (Download iSpeak's Presentation Planner offered below for more detail on this topic.)
  • Use analogies and stories to carry the concept. A story about something familiar bridges the gap to something unfamiliar. iSpeak's storytelling models — particularly the Lesson-Learned and Problem-Solution formats — are built for exactly this: take something you've lived through, extract the principle, and apply it to what you're explaining now.

Practice Exercise:

Take a complex topic from your work and try the "Explain It to a New Hire" test. Describe it in under 90 seconds — no jargon, no abbreviations, no assumed context. Now use What–Why–How to rebuild the explanation for your actual audience.
