How do I sound more confident when I present?
Updated September 2026
Confidence isn't just about the words you choose. It's the combination of what you say, how you say it, and how you show up physically. When your words, voice, and body language all tell the same story, you project confidence. When they send mixed signals, confidence can quickly disappear in the eyes of your audience.
Why It Matters
Audiences make snap judgments within seconds of seeing you take the stage. If your body says "nervous" while your mouth says "I'm glad to be here," they'll believe your body every time. Confidence doesn't just help you — it relaxes your audience and lets them focus on your message rather than worrying about you.
Practical Tips:
1. Ground your stance. Plant your feet and stop moving them without purpose. Random rocking, swaying, or box-stepping broadcasts nervous energy. Stand inside your personal space (roughly an 18-inch radius around your feet), and only move when you have a reason to. When you do move, commit to a spot intentionally.
2. Eliminate hedging language. Phrases like "I think," "I'm not sure but," "kind of," or "sort of" signal hesitancy. Your audience will subconsciously read them as a lack of conviction. Make your statements direct. Own what you know.
3. Slow down and use silence. Rushing is one of the most common tells of nerves. A deliberate pause — especially before or after a key point — signals confidence and helps your message land. If you slow your pace even slightly, filler words disappear on their own.
Practice Exercise:
Record yourself giving a 2-minute presentation on something you know well. Watch it back with the sound off first — what does your body language communicate? Then listen with your eyes closed — do you sound certain? Do three rounds until your visual and vocal channels match your message. Or, practice with our AI Coach who can give you personalized feedback immediately.
