How do professional speakers prepare?

Professional speakers don't just review their content — they prepare in three distinct areas: their subject matter, their audience, and their purpose. Knowing your material is only one-third of the equation. The iSpeak framework asks you to define your purpose using Know/Feel/Do (what do you want the audience to know, feel, and do as a result?) and analyze your audience using Who/Know/Care (who are they, what do they already know, and why do they care about this topic?). Only then do you build and rehearse the actual presentation.

Pros also distinguish between practice and rehearsal — and they don't confuse the two. Reviewing your talking points in your head is practice. Standing up, going through your movements, and delivering it as if the audience is in front of you is rehearsal. iSpeak's rehearsal process has three steps: (1) read your presentation out loud, (2) stand and deliver it with notes, (3) stand and deliver with no notes. Repeat with corrections each time.

Why it matters: "Winging it" isn't courage — it's a disservice to your audience. Knowing your content well doesn't mean you can transfer it effectively to others. Rehearsal is the practice of that transfer.

Practical Tips:

  • Always rehearse your open and close first. These are the most remembered parts of any presentation, and nerves hit hardest at the start. If you're short on time, rehearse the bookends.
  • Arrive early. Use the time to test Audio/Visual, walk the space, and meet a few audience members. Conversations before you speak give you real-time audience intel you can weave into your delivery.
  • Record yourself and listen twice. Use your smartphone audio recorder to capture a rehearsal. Listen once, then listen again — you'll catch things on the second pass you missed the first time.

Practice Exercise:

Do a full dress rehearsal of your next presentation standing up, in the space you'll actually use if possible. Time yourself. Use the iSpeak AI Coach to get feedback on your delivery, then adjust before the live event.

Corporate Ovations: Your Roadmap to More Effective Presentations

This is iSpeak's comprehensive guide to presentation and communication skills. Each chapter focuses on a critical aspect of preparing, developing, and delivering messages that inform, influence, and inspire.

Chapter 2 of Corporate Ovations ("Know Your Purpose") establishes that every presentation must begin with a defined purpose — specifically, what you want the audience to Know, Feel, and Do — because without that foundation, no amount of content or delivery skill can guarantee an effective result.

Chapter 3 of Corporate Ovations ("Audiences Want You to Connect") makes the case that knowing your subject isn't enough — you must also know your audience and tailor your message to their needs, because a presentation only succeeds when its purpose aligns with what the audience actually wants to receive.

Chapter 12 of Corporate Ovations ("Rehearsal and Evaluation") comes down to this:
Rehearsal isn't about knowing your content better — it's about practicing the transfer of that content to your audience, and the most important things to rehearse are your open and close, since they're the moments your audience will remember most.
