How do I stop speaking so fast?
Speaking too fast is almost always caused by nerves. The adrenaline and anxiety that build before a presentation get released the moment you start talking — and the words fly out faster than intended. The iSpeak solution is to deliberately use pacing and the pause as vocal tools, not afterthoughts.
Why it matters: When you rush, your audience can't keep up. They lose the thread, lose confidence in you, and lose interest. Slowing down also eliminates filler words — the two problems feed each other. As Ann Landers put it, "The trouble with talking too fast is you may say something you haven't thought of yet."
Practical Tips:
- Embrace the pause. Silence feels eternal to you but is a microsecond to your audience. Use a 1.5–3 second pause after key questions, at transitions, and before important points. This is one of the most powerful tools any speaker has — professional speakers rank it alongside storytelling in importance.
- Mark your pacing in your notes. Write "SLOW DOWN" or "PAUSE" in your speaking notes at key moments. Vary your pace intentionally: fast pace for excitement, slow pace for gravity and key messages.
- Record and listen. Use your phone to record yourself during practice. Listen back focused only on pace — not content. Awareness is the first step to change.
Practice Exercise:
Read out loud for five minutes every day. When people read, they don't rush and don't use filler words — the words are right in front of them. This trains your brain and ears to speak at a sustainable pace. You can also use our iSpeak AI Coach to practice a short excerpt and get feedback on your delivery rhythm.
