How do I build trust through communication?
Trust is built conversation by conversation — and the quality of those conversations matters more than the quantity. The iSpeak 3-Step Conversation Tool offers a repeatable approach: ask an opinion question and listen actively (show respect), affirm what you heard even when you disagree (create safety), then ask a genuine follow-up question that digs into something specific they just shared (show deeper interest). That third step is critical — a real follow-up can't be pre-loaded, which means it proves you were actually listening.
Why it matters: Trust is the foundation of leader influence. Without it, you get compliance at best. When trust is present, teams commit — they follow because they want to, not because they have to. Combining Relational and Logical influence produces commitment where Formal authority only produces compliance.
Practical Tips:
- Start with opinion questions, not yes/no ones. "What's your take on…?" invites people to open up and signals that their perspective matters.
- Affirm before you respond. Even when you disagree, validate their viewpoint ("That's a fair way to look at it") before sharing yours. This is how safety gets created in the Levels of Conversation model.
- Ask a follow-up that couldn't be pre-loaded. The test: if you could have asked it before they spoke, it's not a real follow-up. Dig into something specific they just told you.
Practice Exercise:
Think of a team member you haven't connected with recently. Use the iSpeak AI Coach to practice a 3-step conversation on a real topic — one where you'd normally jump straight to your own opinion. Get feedback on whether your follow-up felt authentic or generic.
