How do I adapt my presentation for executives?

Executives want the answer first. They don't have time for a slow build — they want the conclusion up front, the business case tight, and a clear path forward. At iSpeak, we use two models specifically designed for executive audiences: the Executive Pitch Model and the Executive Quick Model.

The Executive Pitch Model follows this structure:

  1. Start with the ask — give your conclusion or recommendation immediately
  2. Brief background — analysis, discoveries, and reasons the change is needed
  3. Path forward — timetable and next steps
  4. Financial impact — investment required, ROI, and the cost of inaction

The Executive Quick Model keeps it clear, concise, and complete, spending most of the allotted time on how we move forward rather than setting up the situation.

Both models reflect a key truth from the AMY model: Audience comes first. Their needs and language should drive every decision you make about structure, content, and detail level.

Why it matters: We've seen it repeatedly — a technically brilliant presenter loses the room within 5 minutes because they didn't adjust for the executive audience. Too much jargon, too much detail, too little clarity. Executives who stop listening don't give approval. Adapting your message isn't dumbing it down — it's respecting their time and their decision-making role.

Practical Tips:

  • Lead with your headline. The executive should know your position within the first 60 seconds. Use the Influence Message Model structure: headline → opportunity/analysis → proposed solution → ask.
  • Cut the jargon. Apply the Know Your Audience model — identify what language they speak (finance, operations, strategy) and translate your content into those terms.
  • Anticipate their questions. Executives will probe on ROI, risk, and timeline. Prepare answers ahead of time so you're never caught off guard.

Practice Exercise:

Take a presentation you've recently delivered and rewrite the opening using the Executive Pitch Model — start with the recommendation, then the "why." Deliver it to a peer and ask: "Did you know what I was asking for within the first minute?" Use an AI tool like ChatGPT or Claude to pressure-test your logic and poke holes in your argument before the real meeting.
