How can I make my message stick with my audience?

The last thing you say is the thing most likely to be remembered—which means most presenters are throwing away their best opportunity. Ending with "That's all I have" or opening the floor to Q&A as your final act leaves your message up to chance. iSpeak's MAS model gives you a proven formula for a close that sticks.

But memorable presentations aren't just about how you end—they're also about relevance. Audiences are far more likely to remember information when they can connect it to their own responsibilities, goals, challenges, or well-being. If people can clearly answer, "What does this mean for me?" they are much more likely to retain and act on your message.

A strong close doesn't just summarize what you said. It reminds the audience why it matters to them.

Why It Matters

Audiences retain only a small percentage of what they hear. If you don't engineer the close deliberately, what sticks may be someone else's question, a tangential data point, or simply nothing.

People also tend to remember information that feels personally relevant. When your message is connected to their job, team, customers, goals, or quality of life, it becomes easier to understand, easier to recall, and more likely to influence future decisions.

Practical Tips:

  • Use MAS to close. After your Q&A (not before — more on that below), close with three elements in any order: something Memorable (a statistic, quote, or story that creates an emotional connection), an Action challenge (what do you want them to do next?), and a Summary (recap your purpose and three points so the main idea is fresh). This is the iSpeak close model.
  • Do Q&A before your close, not after. Never end with questions. A difficult question or an off-topic comment becomes the last thing in your audience's mind. Take questions, then deliver your MAS close as your true ending.
  • Make it relevant to the audience. People remember what affects them. Connect your message to the audience's job, goals, challenges, customers, or well-being so they can clearly answer, "Why does this matter to me?" The more personally relevant the message feels, the more likely it is to stick long after the presentation ends.

Practice Exercise:

Write out your next presentation's MAS close right now — before you build the rest of the deck. If you can't write a clear memorable moment, action challenge, and summary in three sentences, your message isn't defined enough yet. Test it with a colleague or an AI chat tool: ask them to repeat back your main point and your call to action after hearing just the close.
