How do I know what questions are going to be asked of me?
You can't know for certain — but thorough audience analysis gets you very close.
Most questions an audience asks fall into one of three categories: they want to understand something better (clarifying questions), they're skeptical of your point (challenge questions), or they want to know what it means for them specifically ("what about me" questions). When you analyze your audience through that lens — their role, their level of buy-in, their concerns — the questions they'll ask become much more predictable.
The iSpeak tool for this is Know-Feel-Do: what does this audience already know about your topic? How do they feel about it? And what do you want them to do? The gaps between where they are and where you need them to be are exactly where questions will emerge.
Why it matters: Surprises in Q&A usually aren't random — they're a sign that the presenter didn't fully analyze the audience before walking in. The better you know your audience, the more their questions feel expected rather than threatening.
Practical Tips:
- Talk to someone who knows the room before you present. A colleague, the meeting organizer, or even a few audience members can tell you what concerns are top of mind. That intelligence is invaluable.
- Think about the audience's level of skepticism. An audience that already believes in your message will ask clarifying questions. A skeptical audience will challenge your assumptions and data. Know which you're walking into.
- Use the iSpeak Presentation Planner's audience analysis section. Working through Who, Know, and Care before you build your presentation surfaces the gaps where questions are most likely to come from. Download the iSpeak Presentation Planner for free in the Related Resources below.
Practice Exercise:
For your next presentation, write out three questions from each category — clarifying, challenge, and "what about me." Then use the iSpeak AI Coach to practice answering each type, rotating through different questioner perspectives until you feel ready for any of them.
